What is the career path for a civil engineer?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 9, 2022

The career path for a civil engineer includes jobs as a construction engineer, an urban planner, and an architectural and engineering manager. Most civil engineers, before beginning work, have completed at least a bachelor's degree program and done some internships.

Some positions are adjacent to civil engineering that you can hold with just an associate's degree, such as a civil engineering CAD technician. It is a great start for civil engineers, but they will not likely grow in the field without additional education.

Civil engineers can work in various industries and positions depending on your specific interest. Transportation engineers work in transportation. Utility engineers work in utilities. Civil engineers take their previously acquired knowledge and then become specialized in a specific portion of an industry.

Most civil engineering graduates begin working right out of college at entry-level engineering positions, such as construction engineers. With experience, they often move up to being more senior engineers. Senior construction engineers enjoy a bit more independence than before.

An urban planner is a civil engineer who works to build new and improve the existing infrastructure of a specific area. They often hold a master's degree in urban planning, which requires specific skills not learned in undergraduate civil engineering programs, but that background is extremely beneficial.

Besides technical positions, many civil engineers choose managerial positions, such as architectural and engineering managers. This focuses more on the management of individuals, teams, and projects. It is the first step into management positions.

After this step, you can push forward into more senior management positions should you choose to.
