What is hidden unemployment?

Hidden unemployment is the additional unemployment or underemployment that goes unrecorded. After all, there are over 150 million workers in the U.S., and it can be hard to compile accurate data about all of those people.

For example, only people who are out of work but also actively searching for work are considered unemployed. That means anyone who's given up on the search, working less than they would like, working in a job unrelated to their skills, or is simply uninterested in working is not officially counted among the unemployed.
