This question is about insurance agent education.
You need a high school diploma or GED to become an insurance agent; however, most agents have a bachelor's degree in a business-related field. This degree can prepare you for a career in insurance and set you apart from the other candidates. Currently, 1/3rd of insurance agents have a bachelor's degree.
Employers prefer to hire insurance agents who have college degrees, especially in a business-related field, as this shows their dedication to their careers. In addition to your education, all states will require you to complete a pre-licensing training course. These can typically be completed within 1 week.
In these courses, you will learn:
Insurance legislation: These are the federal and state laws that govern the insurance sector and how they impact financial products
Insurance regulations: These are similar to the legislation above, but refer to guidelines from governmental and non-governmental organizations about selling financial products to customers and clients
Insurance best practices: This refers to how to sell a wide range of insurance products, maximize profits, and assess risk
Soft skills: These are the skills that are useful when it comes to selling insurance products and includes things like negotiation tactics, communication, and teamwork.
Each state will have different rules and regulations when it comes to becoming an insurance agent. It is important that you check the specific requirements for you state before you choose a training course. There is no nationally recognized qualification for agents.
The type of course that you choose should also take into account the specialization that you are interested in. This could be things like:
Health insurance
Auto insurance
Life insurance
You will not be able to work as an insurance agent until you have completed your course and obtained your license. Depending on your specialization, you may be subject to additional licensing requirements. For example, if you want to sell securities, you will also need to pass the General Securities Representative Exam Series 7 exam.
