How to say no to extra work hours?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Apr. 2, 2023

Give as much notice as possible, be respectful, and provide a reason for saying no to extra work hours. While it can benefit your workplace for you to work extra hours, sometimes it does not work for your specific schedule, which is okay and should be respected.

When you cannot work extra hours, giving as much notice as possible is best. This means that if your boss asks you to stay late, try to let them know right then that it will not work.

Be sure to give a specific reason why you are saying no to the hours. An example of this could be some outside responsibility you cannot miss, such as watching a family member.

When you say no, be sure to do so politely and respectfully. Although you may feel like saying something like, "Don't I do enough of this already?" it is a good idea to try to be honest and polite when saying no, which leads to a more positive relationship with your boss.
