This question is about what a therapist does.

How many hours do therapists work?

By - Mar. 13, 2023

The number of hours a therapist works is around 40 hours a week. The number of hours a therapist works comes down to how many clients they are seeing in a given day or week.

They see around 20 to 30 clients a week and will spend around 10 hours a week writing up notes and completing paperwork. Anything more than 30 clients makes a 40-hour work week difficult, if not impossible.

A therapist sees around 20 clients a week, with 50 to 60-minute therapy sessions. Some therapists see seven or eight clients a day back-to-back, three times per week, while others see just two or three clients each day on weekdays. As a therapist, it's about finding the weekly schedule that works best for you and your clients.

Some therapists see clients just in the morning between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. also known as the early bird therapists. While night owl therapists may work from 3:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Others still may just focus on meeting with clients only on the weekends also known as the weekend warriors.

Let's say that as a therapist you want to work eight hours a day, four days a week. This is done by having a one-hour break each day and with all of your 50-minute sessions one after the other, since you don't need more than a few minutes between sessions to prepare for the next.

If you want to work seven hours a day, four days a week then this would allow you to see 28 clients a week. However, since you take care of all practice responsibilities yourself, you also set aside three hours a week to deal with these business tasks. That leaves you with 25 available sessions. As a therapist, the number of hours your work a day is entirely up to you.
