Intern - Small Animal Medicine and Surgery
Remote Animation Internship Job
About This Role:
The small animal internship at the Veterinary Health Center at Kansas State University is a 12-month post-DVM clinical program. Interns rotate between medicine and surgery services with additional time spent in radiology, ophthalmology, oncology and anesthesia. Other elective rotations may be available, including exotics, cardiology, dermatology and clinical pathology. Interns work closely with board certified clinicians in many specialties. Interns participate in after-hours emergency duty on a rotating basis and will remain in the hospital overnight. Interns on emergency duty also assist in oversight of ICU patients and will support the small animal emergency clinician. Faculty clinicians are committed to providing consultation and back-up support for house officers assigned to emergency duty.
Participation in daily clinical rounds and scheduled house officer rounds is mandatory. The intern will gain knowledge and proficiency in presenting clinical case material from these experiences. Interns are required to prepare and present one seminar.
Interns focus on providing clinical service under the supervision of senior clinicians, and on learning through consultation with radiologists, clinical and anatomic pathologists, and other clinical and basic science specialists. Interns are encouraged to set additional scholarship goals including case studies, case reports, and participation in ongoing research. Interns will not be enrolled in graduate programs and do not take graduate courses.
Interns will receive tri-annual written evaluations which are discussed with the Intern Advisor and the Hospital Director.
The intern must be physically present for orientation on the first day of the program.
The Veterinary Health Center is a modern, spacious facility on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. The University is in the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas with numerous recreational opportunities available.

Through interactions with keeper staff and observations of multiple species both before and after enrichment is given, students will gain an understanding of species specific behaviors, what is needed to stimulate or deter specific behaviors and the process used to approve and evaluate enrichment items.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to conceptualizing new enrichment items, utilizing the current system for approval, construction of items to meet all safety standards, observation and documentation of the use of these items, and modifications to items as needed. In addition, the interns will assist the keeper staff in the maintenance of our current monthly enrichment calendars and enrichment tracking sheets. Qualifications
Second Year College Student or recent graduate (2 years or less).

The goal of our animal enrichment internships is to conceptualize and build animal enrichment devices that will stimulate our animals mentally and physically in order to promote species appropriate behaviors. Through interactions with keeper staff and observations of multiple species both before and after enrichment is given, students will gain an understanding of species specific behaviors, what is needed to stimulate or deter specific behaviors and the process used to approve and evaluate enrichment items.

The Stark County Park District is currently seeking unpaid, part time Wildlife Enrichment interns to further their education in animal enrichment and experience at our Wildlife Conservation Center. If you're passionate about wildlife animals big and small and wish to gain some hands-on experience in animal care, we're the place for you!
Essential Functions:
* Gain a working knowledge of Ohio's native wildlife, human/wildlife conflicts, non-lethal solutions, and state and federal regulations governing wildlife rehabilitation.
* With close supervision care for education animals (cleaning, diets, and enrichments) and learn species specific daily enrichment practices for our education animals and some rehabilitation animals through diets, caging criteria, handling techniques, toys, programing, data collection and entry, etc.
* Student may be asked to help with basic general duties as needed such as: laundry, dishes, cage cleaning, equipment cleaning, etc.
* Students will also be responsible for creating and completing a project, Featured Case featuring a novel enrichment item and any findings from their enrichment item. This feature will be displayed on our website and/or face book for public viewing.
