As a core Community Nutrition and Health statewide program, the CalFresh Healthy Living, University of California program (CFHL, UC) offers comprehensive evidence-based nutrition and physical activity education, aligned with changes to the surrounding community context known as "policy, system, and environmental change efforts" in early childhood centers, schools and community environments. Services are provided in 34 counties with 1,600 volunteers known as "extenders" (trained teachers, afterschool staff, community members). The majority of CFHL, UC participants are preschool and school aged youth and their families. The CFHL, UC program also works with SNAP-Ed eligible adults, seniors, and other priority populations. By aligning community education with policy, systems and environmental change strategies, CFHL, UC creates long-lasting community impact. CFHL, UC is federally funded by the United States Department of Food and Agriculture as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program's Education network (SNAP-Ed) across the country.
Position Summary:

This position's primary foci are to conduct, manage, and evaluate a nutrition education program to create a healthier school and community environment.
The Community Education Specialist 2 position will perform the full range of program implementation duties. Incumbent will coordinate, manage, and deliver nutrition education with community-based adults and/or youth in partnership with local public health and community organizations. Within policy guidelines established by the Board of Directors, the terms of the Purchase of Service Agreement, and licensing requirements, the Director is responsible for overall administration and supervision of the total program of day care services to families and children. These responsibilities shall include coordination and supervision of all program components, such as intellectual growth of young children, preventative health and social services, nutrition, staff development, community outreach, parent involvement in program operation, fiscal management and accountability, office and facilities management. In order to effectively carry out these overall responsibilities, the Director shall consider, confer and consult with other supervisory staff members of the center in arriving at decisions affecting areas in which these persons may be specialists.
Responsibilities
Maintaining Good Standards by developing and maintaining quality standards of education and nurture of the children throughout the total day of the center's operation.
Maintaining a program that meets the emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs of the individual child and the group.
Coordinating the work schedules of individual staff with planned group activities.
Responsibility for seeing that staff records behavior and progress of each child and utilizing these with staff for program planning and referrals, as needed.
Proper Staff development by Supervision of Staff.
Helping staff to understand the framework of the community in which they work and the day care's role in fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army.
Responsible for the professional growth and development of staff through regularly scheduled individual conferences, group and staff meetings, and frequent observation and discussion of teacher's performance with their groups.
Helping staff find practical application for theoretical knowledge.
Maintaining professional relationships in dealing with staff.
Assisting in creating a mechanism for regular communication between board and PAC.

Qualifications
MS or MA and a valid New York State Teacher's Certification N-6 or Birth -2 (or equivalent certificate from another state, which is recognized by the New York State Department of Education).
Two years group teacher's experience plus academic coursework pertinent to the appropriate age levels.
Demonstrated leadership qualities (mature judgment) and ability to work cooperatively with all people.
Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships and a sound educational program; to be articulate, pleasant, and resourceful.
Willingness to utilize any training available to improve administrative and supervisory skills as well as understanding of fiscal and budgetary management.
