Albion College company history timeline
On March 23, 1835, Methodist settlers in Spring Arbor Township obtained a charter for the Spring Arbor Seminary from the Michigan Territorial Legislature.
Chartered in 1835, the college was founded to educate the region’s male settlers and Native Americans.
Foundations for a building were begun in 1837 at a location about 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of the current village of Spring Arbor but were soon abandoned due to the economic turmoil caused by the Panic of 1837.
In the end Methodist Church officials settled on an area near the Forks, officially moving the school location to the village of Albion, and changing the name to Albion Wesleyan Seminary in 1839.
The cornerstone of the Central Building (known today as Robinson Hall) was laid July 6, 1841.
Two years later in 1841, the name changed again to the Wesleyan Seminary at Albion.
With 60 acres (243,000 m) of land donated by Albion pioneer Jesse Crowell, the cornerstone was laid for the first building in 1841.
The seminary, now named the Wesleyan Seminary, first held classes in 1843, in the local Methodist Church.
The Albion Female Collegiate Institute was founded in 1850 by the Wesleyan Seminary Corporation.

The North Hall was erected in 1856, and has been used for a variety of college classes and programs through the years.
But in 1857, the two schools merged under the name of the Wesleyan Seminary and Female College at Albion.
Albion College, 1861-present The separate Wesleyan Seminary and Albion Female College finally joined together in 1861 when Albion College officially received its charter.
In 1861, the name officially changed to Albion College, allowing all students to receive Bachelor’s degrees upon graduation.
The college began to offer four-year degrees in 1861.

The Wesleyan Seminary’s first building, the Bell House, had been moved to a site off campus in 1881.
Prior to 1884 all athletic events at Albion College were primarily informal--similar to intramural sports or pick up games.
The first MIAA event was a track and field meet in late May and early June of 1888.
