Under close supervision, plans, organizes, develops, and instructs recreation, sports, or youth and adult programs & activities at various recreation facilities or parks. Positions may include assignments in the following areas: Sports (Sports Camps, facility rentals, officiating, scorekeeping, refereeing youth and adult sports) and Youth Services (Wee People Playschool Program, Summer Kidz Camp, Creativity Camp and facility rentals); Senior services (senior programming, facility rentals) or clerical. Assist in the planning, organizing and supervising of youth and adult recreation activities and programs. Keep score or records for citywide youth and adult sports programs as needed. Assist with the conducting of youth recreation programs, summer camp programs, city wide special events and youth and adult sports as assigned. Set up rooms for recreation activities or rentals. Supervise and monitor facility rentals to ensure applicant complies with city department policies and procedures. Be familiar with department flyers, publications and city services to be able to share accurate information with customers regarding department and City-wide programs and services. Participate in and conduct recreation activities, program planning, attend staff meetings, review current programs and make recommendations to immediate supervisor. May be required to work weekends, evenings and/or holidays and city wide special events. Excellent customer service skills required with the ability to deal with difficult customers. Prompt and regular attendance. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Typical Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Preferred experience (paid or volunteer) including: working with youth, child care, teaching, customer service or other sports/recreational duties. Licenses/Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain (within 3 months of hire) CPR and basic first aid certifications required. A valid CA driver's license may be required for certain positions. If under 18 years of age, must be able to obtain a Work Permit. Knowledge of: Principles, rules, and practices of organizing, planning and conducting recreation programs. First aid and CPR methods necessary in taking safety precautions. Basic operations, services and activities of recreation programs, activities and events. Principles and practices of recreation program development and implementation. Rules and proper techniques for playing a variety of sports activities. Principles and practices of data collection and report preparation. Current office equipment including computers. Ability to: Work a flexible schedule. Adhere to work schedule and deadlines. Instruct individual and group recreation programs & activities for youth and adults. Speak publicly to program participants. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Learn and perform assigned tasks. Prepare and maintain recreation program records as directed. Interact tactfully and effectively with program participants. Chaperone participants on excursions, recreation programs and special events. Develop actives for programs assigned. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, co-workers, supervisors and all City staff. Ability to work well with a diverse community. Supplemental Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to bend, stoop, lift up to 50 pounds for the purpose of lifting and holding children and/or equipment. Work is performed in recreation facilities indoors and outdoors in a variety of environmental conditions such as parks, outdoor recreation and special event environments. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, moving traffic, construction sites, hazardous chemicals, toxic fumes, irate citizens, infectious diseases, and air and water borne pathogens. EMERGENCY SERVICES: All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster. Employee must complete required FEMA courses within six months of employment.
