Duties Include:
Curriculum delivery: Design lessons and practicums that adhere to the USCG-approved AB-Limited curriculum.

Job Requirements
Valid and current Merchant Mariner Credential.
STCW Certification: Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsement specific to engineering, including advanced safety and firefighting.
Sea Experience: Extensive experience at sea in progressively responsible engineering roles, typically including prior experience as a Chief Engineer.
Knowledge of Maritime Regulations: Familiarity with applicable national and international maritime regulations and standards for training vessels.
Medical Fitness Certificate: Up-to-date medical certificate confirming fitness for duty at sea.
Leadership and Management Training: Certification in maritime leadership or management, as required by STCW.
Teaching or Training Certification: Qualification in training or instructing through a USCG-certified Train the Trainer Course.
First Aid and CPR Certification: Current certification in first aid, CPR, and emergency response specific to maritime standards.

What can you expect?
As the Able Seaman, you are an entry-level deckhand of a cargo vessel with additional duties in the engine room. As a qualified member of the deck department, you may work as a watch stander and/or deck worker. Polar Tankers Overview
Polar Tankers, a wholly owned subsidiary of ConocoPhillips, provides marine transportation for North Slope production, using five company-owned, double-hulled tankers in addition to chartering third-party vessels as necessary. The tankers deliver oil from Valdez, Alaska, to refineries primarily on the West Coast of the United States. The company operates five Endeavour-class tankers: Polar Endeavour, Polar Resolution, Polar Discovery, Polar Adventure and Polar Enterprise.
Description
If you are selected as the Able Bodied Seaman (AB), you will be working under the direction of the Chief Mate and Master. The AB must have a good understanding of all deck machinery, cargo systems, and maintenance regimes, and be a prudent navigation and cargo watchkeeper. The AB is required to participate in all drills and emergencies and to assist with the enforcement of rules, procedures, regulations, and pollution prevention.
Position Overview
Your responsibilities may include:
+ Docking/undocking procedures (handling lines, securing ship, etc.) and assisting with loading and discharging of cargo
+ Standing watch, either as lookout or on the bridge steering the vessel
+ Performing deck related maintenance duties under supervision of the Boatswain
+ Working aloft in certain situations
+ Typically works two 4-hour watches per 24-hour period with overtime occurring routinely. You may not work more than 15 hours per day or 36 hours per 3-day period
When docking the A. B. may be responsible for:
+ Loading ballast and using a tape to gauge tanks
+ Tend mooring lines as needed to keep ship against the berth
+ Assisting in crane operations for cargo hoses and taking on vessel stores
+ Operating manual valves and/or checking mechanical valves for accurate operation (ship dependent)
+ Bleeding lines at the chicksan and removing/attaching blanks
+ Being alert for spills throughout the operation
+ Taking lines from the tugboat, throwing heaving lines to the dock, pulling back the messenger lines, attaching messenger lines to mooring lines and assisting in slacking the mooring lines
When undocking the A.B. may be responsible for:
+ Pulling in and securing mooring lines and assisting in handling the tug lines (placing the line over the bit, removing the line from the bit)
+ Operating mechanical winches as necessary which may require guiding/lifting of the mandel shackle (not on all vessels) and securing the deck at the end of the operation. This includes stowing of lines, anchors, pilot ladders, fire hoses, etc.
+ Performing maintenance duties including maintenance/repair of deck equipment/machinery such as rigging/tackle, boat falls, crane(s), mooring lines and wires, and all safety equipment
+ Assisting with upkeep of decks and super structure, both interior and exterior

Able to lift and carry equipment and gear up to seventy-five (75) pounds to assist in mobilization/demobilization.
Proven track record of punctuality and professionalism
Ability to work 100 nautical miles offshore without becoming seasick. Ability to assist other vessel guests who may suffer from motion sickness.

The Able Mariner (AB) is one of three able seaman positions which functions to assist the Chief/First Mate on Oregon State University Research Vessels in the maintenance and repair of the vessel and its deck equipment, and to assist the mate on watch in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. Due to the classification and tonnage of the Taani, the Coast Guard requires that AB positions on the vessel be filled by a mix of AB Special and AB limited licenses.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and two oceanographic research vessels, the 199-foot ocean-going Taani and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha. 35%-Stands watch as helmsman/visual and radar lookout/winch operator at sea. Stands security watch in ports other than home port.
30%- Cleans, paints, and maintains ship's hull, decks, bulkheads, equipment, masts, quarters, heads and tanks. Assists in mooring and unmooring the vessel; with line handling during docking and undocking; with the deployment and recovery of instrumentation and equipment; and in rigging and handling scientific gear. Paint inside and outside of tug on an on-going basis.

General cleanup of tugs and barges.
General cooking and galley duties as may be required.
Fill out material requisitions and work order forms.
Tankerman:
Monitor product level in tanks, operate diesel engines, operate cargo pumps, operate tank/pipeline valves, operate manual and hydraulic booms.
Communicate with foreign crews and oil facility personnel.
Adjust and secure barge lines.
Complete loading and discharge gauge reports.
Inspect vessel for Coast Guard and state regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
Valid MMC with Tank Barge PIC endorsement.
Previous work experience on marine diesels necessary.
Must be able to comprehend and respond and carry out specific orders from the captain or mate.
Ability to communicate effectively with captain, mate, co-workers, dispatchers, and customers in English.
Ability to learn and make application of safety awareness, injury prevention and firefighting.
Carry out essential job responsibilities and duties listed above with a minimum of direction.
Must be able to understand and use information contained in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
Operate all firefighting and lifesaving equipment aboard.
Must complete firefighting training within 6 months of hire.
Must have a valid first aid/CPR training certificate.
Complete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hire.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to get along with crew members in confined quarters for prolonged periods of time.
Job Condition and Environment
Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
Must not be afraid of heights.
Must be physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, kneel while painting, climb onto barges and up and down ladders, and bending and twisting during boat/barge tie up.
Work aboard boats and barges using pike poles, heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools for repairs, paint, thinner, paint brushes/rollers, paint chipping tools, cleaning solvents, kitchen utensils/cookware, power cords.
Expected Hours of Work
Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours
Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.

Essential Job Functions:
Assist Captain / Senior Captain with ferry operations as directed.
Greet passengers and collect payment. Verify reservations.
Sweep and wash decks along with other areas of the boat and dock.
Perform routine cleaning and painting about the vessel. Pickup and dispose of trash on vessel and loading/unloading areas.
Adhere to safety standards and address potential safety hazards.
Observe passengers to ensure safe behaviors; ensure safe loading and departure from ferry.
Participate in training sessions and drills. Must have ability to meet tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Captain / Captain during times of emergency or otherwise.
Responsible for immediately informing on-site IGC Agent on duty, Security and Supervisor on Duty of any Internal Control or State Regulation violations related to gaming activity of which you commit, witness or become aware; must report pursuant to company Self-Reporting Policy.
